Central Coast Road Trip
Pismo Beach feels like one of those places you accidentally overlook and then wonder why you didn’t stop sooner. Just 20 minutes southwest of San Luis Obispo, it’s an easy detour off the 101, but somehow still feels laidback, uncrowded, and genuinely relaxing. If you’ve ever driven past it on a California road trip, consider this your sign to pull over next time.
We spent a few days here over spring break in a sprinter van, and it ended up being one of those trips that just hits. Nothing overly complicated, nothing overplanned; just great weather, a lot of laughing, and the kind of easy rhythm that makes everyone happy. Below is how we structured our time, plus what we’d add next time.

Day 1: Travel Day
🚗 Getting There: We drove up from Southern California. If you’re not in a rush (or your kids need to get their energy out), this stretch of the 101 has some easy stops:
- Marina Park Playground (Ventura)
- Jack’s Bistro & Famous Bagels (Carpinteria)
- Tomol Interpretive Play Area (Carpinteria)
- Island Brewing Company (Carpinteria)
- Kids World Playground (Santa Barbara)
- Santa Barbara Public Market (Santa Barbara)
- Shipwreck Playground (Santa Barbara)
- Brass Bear Brewing (Santa Barbara)
🏨 Stay: Pismo Coast Village RV Resort
- We were one of the only sprinter vans; it was mostly full RVs, but it still worked perfectly
- Great location, easy beach access, and very family friendly
Evening:
- Quick swim in the heated pool
- Dinner at the campsite (mac n cheese for kids, tacos for adults)
- S’mores around the campfire
- Walk to the beach for sunset
- First night sleeping in the van (a first for us, and a highlight!)

Day 2: Oceano Sand Dunes & Pismo Beach
Breakfast: At the campsite
Morning: Oceano Sand Dunes
- Rented sandboards from Oceano Surf Shack
- Parked near the Sandboarding Entry Trail Head
- Pro tip: wax the boards after every run — it makes a big difference
- It’s a simple activity, but the payoff is huge. Both the kids and adults loved it, and it ended up being one of those core memory-type experiences

Lunch: Pier St. Deli
- Grabbed sandwiches after returning the boards and took them back to the campground
Afternoon: Pismo Beach Pier Plaza
- Quick reset at the heated pool
- Biked and scootered into town
- Ice cream at Cowboy Cookie & Ice Cream
- Playground stop at the pier
- Photos at the Pismo Beach sign
- Beers (and a pizza for the kids) at Pismo Brewing Company
Dinner: Wooly’s Beach Bar & Grill
Day 3: Avila Beach (Half-Day)
Breakfast: Old West Cinnamon Rolls
Morning: Avila Beach
- Coffee from Kraken Coffee Company
- Walked promenade (kids ran, we walked— standard)
Mid-Morning: Avila Valley Barn
- Farm animals
- Fresh produce and snacks
- Easy, low-key stop that works well with younger kids
Afternoon: Headed home
- We seriously considered extending another night, but didn’t pack enough clothes. Easily fixable next time.
If We Had More Time…or Packed More Clothes
- ATVs in Oceano Dunes
- Drive on the beach (Grover Beach side)
- HotShots Family Entertainment Center
- Montana de Oro State Park (~35 min drive)
- Morro Bay (~35 min drive)
- San Luis Obispo Farmers Market (Thursday evenings)
- Dinosaur Caves Park (Shell Beach)
Final Thoughts
This trip just worked.
We spent our days laughing our way down sand dunes, biking around town, swimming, and letting the kids run free. Nights were slower: campfires, s’mores, and walking to the beach for sunset.
The vacation struck the perfect balance — plenty to keep the kids entertained, but genuinely fun for the adults.
Pismo itself is exactly the kind of place I love: laidback, beach, and a little surf-town feel without trying too hard. It’s beautiful without being overdone. We left already talking about when we’d come back. Next time, we’re staying longer.
